what\'s the difference?

what's the difference in chains? i mean...what does 520, 525, 420 187 mean...and how bout this x-link and o-ring shiet? someone school me please!

Most bikes come with OEM 530 chains. Its common to change to a 520 to reduce weight, especially for race bikes.

520 vs. 530

First digit (5) is multiplied by 1/8" to determine the distance between rollers. Example: 500-series chains have rollers that are 5/8" apart. Both 520 chains and 530 chains have the same 'pitch'.

The Second and Third digits (20 in a 520 chain, or 30 in a 530 chain) are multiplied by 1/80" to determine the width. Example: 520 chains are 20/80" or 1/4" in width where 530 chains are 30/80" or 3/8" in width.

You mean they measure that stuff in inches not millimeters? That may be the only SAE part on anyone's bike in this website - with the possable exception of the Buell forum.

The 520, 525, 530 stuff is how wide and thick the chain is. A more powerful bike requires a wider, thicker and stronger chain: This means don't take the 530 off your R1 and replace it with a 520. The 520 could actually break and possibly even knock a hole in your engine cases...

Originally, there was no means to hold grease around the links of a chain - You were expected to keep it very clean and lube it VERY often (nearly every ride). Someone came up with the idea using an O-ring to hold grease inside the links. The X-ring and W-ring stuff describes the shape of the ring - a simple O only contacts the side plates once on each side. An 'X' shape contacts twice, a 'W' contacts twice on one side and 3 times on the other. The idea is to seal the grease inside the chain more effectively and extend it's life.
