Ok, after removing every freaking bolt, screw, latch, buckle, and zipper...no wait there wasn't a zipper but still, after removing every conceivable thing I could on my tail section, I still can't seem to find the key to locating the wiring harness for the turn signals and license plate light. I am trying to get that God aweful ugly black plastic fender off and put on my new sleek fender eliminator. The bottom tray of the undertail has, what looks like, black plastic buttons on it but I can't figure out how to get them out. If this is the key to getting the tail apart which gives me access to the wiring harness, please give me some hints on how to remove them. If they are not the key, any suggestions on getting this thing off without cutting my wires? Thanks for any and all help.

Jen

Yes the buttons (plastic pop rivets are what they are called) are the key! You need to stick a small phillips screwdriver into the middle of the rivets. This will UNLOCK the rivets and you will be able to pull them out which in turn will allow you access to your wiring harness. Hope this helps. /images/icons/smile.gif

i have an R1 and a few you can reach from the inside with a small screw driver to pop the middle out (they are plastic pop rivets, pop the middle out and it releases) the rest i used a sharp utility knife to poke into the center section under the lip of the ring, and pull it out. it takes some trying but after the first one you will get a feel for the best spot to pry from (hint: the center of the pop rivet is x shaped, you want to stab in between the cross of the x and pry out. once you pop the rivet it will release. this will take the blue tail off of the black undertail. i also have three screws, but you said you took them out all ready. hope this helps some, and BE CAREFUL USING THE UTILITY knife. I was working late, got careless and nearly cut my arm off while shaving the undertail. I was delibrately trying to be careful, but it only took one moment of carelessness to make a long nite. good luck

Thanks guys, I am going to work on it tomorrow and hopefully I will come back to the forum with all 10 of my fingers in one piece. If my typing looks strange, you know I lost a digit from some sort of pointy object /images/icons/wink.gif

You are making it way to hard. There are only a few screws along with several rivits holding the tail cowling on to the undertray. Imiagine the rivits like pushbuttons, push them in to release. Then after they are removed you can reset the center post of the rivit. E-Z

those plastic rivets are meant to be pushed in to remove. just push the center in with a small screwdriver and remove to reinstall push the center back out then push the rivet in then push the center pin untill it is flush. x acto knife what was he thinking.
