This is a repost of a note I placed in the tech forum but hoping maybe the Kawi specialists might recognize this problem. Thanks.

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to motorcycles so forgive me if I sound like an idiot.

I'm having a problem with an 89 Kawi EX500.

The bike starts fine and runs while in neutral but when I click it into gear, roll on throttle and release the clutch the bike stalls. No the kickstand isn't down, I'm not quite that new but I'm wondering if the button? sensor? that recognizes the kickstand position may be faulty?

I've replaced the clutch switch under the clutch but that didn't seem to fix the problem?

EDIT: I have removed and tested the side stand switch and it appears to be working properly. So if it's not the clutch switch and not the side stand switch does anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: Removed stuff that was just confusing the issue.

Thanks for any help,
Brent

Just as an aside although it may be irrelevant to troubleshooting, the previous owner of the bike put a jumper wire between two of the wires going into the clutch switch that made the bike rideable although the neutral light never goes off. (black yellow and black)

what you describe sounds exactly like the kickstand/clutch switch. the fact that this circuit appears to be tampered with before only confirms my suspicions. i would return it to the stock configuration and diagnose the real problem rather than try to patch the rig. /images/icons/wink.gif

If its a button, sometimes they stick. Try putting the kickstand up and down a few times to unstick the button. If it is some other kind of sensor, then your guess is as good as mine /images/icons/crazy.gif

those switches can be tricky the button may look like it works fine but on the inside the contacts may be faulty or coroded. if that switch is not to expensive i would try repacing it.
