Canadians in Top 5 at Daytona Formula USA
March 4, 2002
Owen Weichel, riding for Chicago based 4&6 Racing, started the wet Formula USA Sportbike final Sunday at Daytona from 5th on the grid, behind front row starters Tom Kipp, Larry Pegram, Josh Hayes, and Lee Acree. Andrew Nelson, who is racing the full Formula USA series this season with 4&6, started 11th.
Owen Weichel: (Explaining that his face shield fogged up in the wet conditions) "I really feel bad I let these guys down. I normally have a breath guard and I didn't bring it here this weekend, I wasn't expecting the rain. This bike was a race winner. I was sliding it sideways in the chicane and I love riding in the rain, but I just couldn't see. Barney's been riding real good this weekend. He's obviously won two races and he had the track really dialed, but I saw where I was a little bit stronger and I saw that Wood was coming up so I just wanted to try and make a break."
Final Formula USA Sportbike Results
1. Jeff Wood, Mansfield, Mass., Suzuki 600
2. Michael Barnes, Boca Raton, Fla., Suzuki 600
3. Owen Weichel, Huntington Beach, Calif., Kawasaki 600
4. Andrew Nelson, Kars, Ontario, Kawasaki 600
5. Johno Bowman, Tequesta, Fla., Suzuki 600
Another Canadian in Daytona for some pre-season racing before the Parts Canada Superbike Championship gets underway in May is Honda's Frank Trombino. Trombino qualified 22nd for the Formula USA Superbike final with a time of 2:01.352 on his Canadian-spec Open Sport Bike machine. We're not sure where he finished in the two Superbike legs on Sunday, as we haven't yet received complete results from the weekend.
