I'm about as new to the motorcycle scene as you can get. I need to know what brand you guys would recommend for leather suits, jackets, boots, etc. In other words... who is the Sony of the bike apparel world?

Thx in Advance

I can't recommend a brand because I don't know what you can afford.

But suffice to say that you should buy the BEST gear that you can afford. In fact, if you haven't bought a bike yet, buy your gear first so do don't feel the cash crunch when it comes time to outfit yourself.

At the moment, I have Fieldsheer leathers (pants and jacket). Though these leathers have saved my hide in a few low-speed crashes and one high-speed crash, the seams proved easy to rip apart, and I could see this being of a serious issue if I had slid further on ashphalt.

My Fieldsheers came at $600. Reg Pridmore of CLASS Riding school recommends leathers at about $800 and above for the best protection possible.

I will be definately getting leathers with the seams sewn better (and double-stitched) next time.

Okay here goes...I personally have an Arai helmet, Spidi carbotech gloves, spidi hook 2 pc. leathers, joe rocket boots. My textile stuff i bought when i was first learning to ride is all First Gear stuff. It is pretty good, and i still wear it when it is cold outside.

I completely agree with buying the gear first... especially a good jacket, and helmet.

Remember to get a motorcycle specific jacket, whether leather, or textile, you want something that will hold up in a crash... Most department store leather jackets will shred to pieces in just a few feet when sliding down the asphalt.

The jacket should be tight, but fairly comfortable... remember that it will break in as you wear it, a decent motorcycle jacket will probably cost you anywhere between $250 and $500.

Depending on the riding you do, and yer budget, you might want to look into an Aerostitch suit. They are Cordura suits, that have lots of pockets, armor, and are quite comfortable. (So I hear- I don't own one)

You ask about brands, I would recommend... First Gear, Hein Garicke, Joe Rocket, Dainese, Teknic, IXS, Spidi, Kushitani... and more that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Boots... If you can afford a good set of motorcycle boots, I would go with a pair by Sidi, or Alpinestars.

Helmets... get one that fits a little snug, as it will break in as well... Get used to wearing earplugs under it as well (we don't want you to lose hearing) I recommend a full face. Right now I wear an Arai Quantum/f Haga replica. I used to have a Shoei RF-R...

Thanks for all the help guys... I'm looking at some Alpinestars Racing Boots (S-MX Gore Tex), A Shoei Helmet (X-SPII), as well as a Fieldsheer Carbon Race Leather Jacket, an Air Speed Leather Jacket and an X-20 Back Protector. Any opinions on my gear?

You mean to your body right? /images/icons/wink.gif In the summer when you are riding in warmer temps the leathers will be more difficult to peel from your legs even with the liners. You could choose to wear some nylon running shorts/pants underneath but that would just make things hotter. It's not a big deal really.

you can get draggin jeans for casual riding around town, but if you are really planning on pushin it leather works better. rather be hot than deal with the pain of sliding on asphalt...

I agree with the others... how much do you want to spend?

You can spend:

$500 - 1000 for a leather suit.
$100 - 300 for boots
$50 - 150 for gloves
$200 - 500 for a helmet

As far as leathers go, they will ALL protect you, same for boots and gloves... the one piede of equipement I would not skimp on is a helmet, buy the best one that you can afford. Shoei, Arai, HJC, OGK, Suomy... basically any decent helmet over $199 bucks will suffice. DO NOT buy one of the generic cheapo helmets at Walmart!

I've been riding almost 18 months now... and am still building my wardrobe.

I have an OGK Helmet, Triumph 2 piece leather suit, Triumph Gloves (first bike was a Triumph), Side Race Vertebra boots and a Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket.

I'd start off with a leather jacket that can be zipped into leather pants for the 2 piece suit, get some gloves and descent boots and a helmet.

After that, you might want to consider leather pants for when you decide to ride the twisties... maybe buy some draggin jeans in the meantime? I particularly like the Phoenix jacket because it gives you a light breathable jacket to wear in summer...

Bout all I need now are some draggin jeans to wear around town and I'm looking to buy my first 1 piece leather suit shortly.

Good luck, let us all know what you get. Btw, I got my boots and helmet from http://www.DexDirect.com... they dont carry OGK helmets in the US and I saved about $100 bucks on my boots by ordering from the UK. For helmets, dont necessarily buy it from your dealer... checkout http://www.helmethouse.com for some good prices. There's a few other places on line for leathers too like http://www.kneedraggers.com
