Long day at work today. I get home and go for a short ride and by the time I get back from my ride I've forgotten all the stress from work. The phone rings and it's a guy asking for me. A little unusual, I don't get many calls...4 per year on average.

It's a salesman asking if I am Ryan so and so with a Visa card ending in****. After getting very alarmed something was wrong with my credit or ID had been stolen, the salesman on the phone assured me that everything was OK and that since I have been a good standing member with Visa over the past year, they want to send me out a free $100 gas card and a $25 gift certificate to Target.

I'm like "hey cool, free gas for my bike ". After saying how much he likes the name of the street and town where I live, he then asks if he can transfer me over to their shipping dept. to verify my name and address for shipping. Then he recaps the free stuff and that I'll be entered in a discount club for a free trial 30 day membership. Still thinking about the free gas(gotta feed my bike), I'm like OK

I should have hit the breaks there, I mean transfering me to the shipping dept to confirm my address /wwwthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif But I was still thinking about the free $100 in gas and was like "OK "

Now the guy from the suppossed shipping dept. picks up the line saying something about this conversation being recorded. Kinda sounds legit, so I'm like yeah whatever. Then the guy goes on to say that they are also sending out a free issue of both Maxim and Rolling Stone with as part of the free trial membership to the savings club. Now he says there will be a $2.00 shipping and handling fee.

This is when I started to have second thoughts, but was like free gas  so I gave them permission to charge me the 2 bucks to send out the package. Dumb I know, but free gas

Now about 45 mins after speaking to these guys, I think I've been scammed. I mean I'm not worried about the 2 bucks, but if they pull this on a couple of thousand people, it starts to add up :frown: I'm worried none of the free things they promised will arrive and/or it will damn near impossible for me to cancel this free trial membership :frown:

Having to make this post is very embarrasing, I mean I feel like a complete sucka :frown: Someone please give me advise on what my options are in this situation?

I want to call the bank and cancel my card and/or payment of this $2.00 shipping charge, but I'm worried I will not be able to for I did give them permission to send me this stuff on tape :frown:

I hope if I cancel my card, they will not be able to automatically enroll me in this savings club if I am not able to get in touch with them to tell them I am not interested.

I didn't give them any personal information, just confirmed my name, address, and the last 4 digits of my card. all info they allready had.

Please help :808993-banghead:

WOW DAWG; 2 dollars and some crappy memberships? I was expecting someone got you out of 10K with the Nigeria Scam or something. Can't you call them back and cancel? :808908-wtf:

This is embarrasing too, I didn't right down the phone number the rep gave me to contact them. I figured the guy was calling from Visa, but now that I think about it...He never said that he was with Visa, only that "they are running a thank you program for members with good credit". Hence I just assumed they were with Visa and that I could always call the number on the back of the card. Dumb, I know.

It's not that I hate talking on the phone, but I'll avoid it if I can. I'd rather go to the dentist to have some teef pulled than talk on the phone. That's why I'm really bad about keeping in touch with people, but that's another story...

Anyone else have any ideas or know for a fact if it's just a scam to get me signed up for these magazines and the discount club :help:

Phone up Visa and claim you "lost" your card.

They will cancel your card and send you a new one. Claim you lost it the afternoon before the call.

Never, EVER give personal information to anyone that initiated the call. Period.

Sorry man, but it looks pretty bleak. I hope your next call was to VISA to cancel that card post-haste and to advise them of the likely fraud. :frown:

I got a $5 charge by the same type of thing except it just appeared and they said that I put in my email address in a box (on the internet) so they could charge me? If you didnt give them your credit card personally/directly it is illegal for them to have it. The scam that got me was getting credit card numbers from JC Whitney's web site. Then adding their charge to people tab for JC Whitney orders. Companys can not share billing info (credit card numbers). I never did call Visa on it, I just phoned the company, just for them to stop billing me the repeated charge, but it still cost me $5. :flame:

I lost $30, and the worst part is I wrote them a check and handed itover.

Two very hot highschool seniors (well they claimed they were) were going door to door selling magazine subscriptions. They claimed there was a contest to see who could sell the most and the prize was a class trip or a chance to star in a porn video or something, I don't really remember as I was too excited about having two hot highschool chicks in my living room. After lots of giggling, I finally shut up long enough for them to go through their sales pitch and the end result is I sign up for two years of Motorcyclist for $30. I know a one year subscription is only $9.99, but I could have sworn I heard one of them say I could be in the porn vid with them so I paid up.

A few months later I am clearing out some papers and come across the receipt. I have yet to get the first issue of my subscription and never heard from the director of the porn video so I call the number on the receipt (long distance call too). The lady tells me that they don't deal with Motorcyclist magazine and from the reference number on my receipt I have actually signed up for two years of Forbes magazine. Not wanting to admit I got swindled by two highschool honeys, I go on to tell her that whatever it is I signed up for, I still haven't gotten it. She reads back my address from her records to confirm that it is correct then tells me she will make sure it gets sent out right away.

That was about 4 years ago and I still have no clue what the inside of a Forbes magazine looks like.

RPR, shouldn't you be able to back out of any deal set on the street or on the phone within 14 days?

I hate to admit this but when I was 17 and hard for cash I got a job as a telemarketer*ducks as bullets fly!*

Let me tell you what I'm pretty sure is going on. Most credit card companies offer membership thru other banks, etc. These have lesser rep. and could honestly care less. For example, city bank offers visa cards....

So, you get a credit card thru one of these companies(and I'm assuming you did), this could have been years in the past but you still carry the card.

Well, they sell your info. to a telemarketing group and these guys call you up and may even state that are calling on behalf of Visa, a out right lie! Then they offer you stuff like you mentioned. One of the biggest things we used to offer was credit card security membership.

*cheery voice* "Only $2 monthly membership!"

They all ready have all your info. so all they need is your voice recorded. On this recording they will say something like....

"to verify your enrollment in this great offer, I will need to confirm/state your date of birth/ your address/ etc, etc." As long as you give some info. on that recording, they basically have a signature.

Well, the best thing to do would be to call the telemarketing group but to be honest, you would be on the phone for at least a hour and they would maybe end up saying that you have to call someone else like the people who actually run this program. So, I would say call your c.c. and cancel your card ASAP. You might have got hit with the $2 charge but that could be the tip of the ice berg. They surely plan to get more out of you. Think, even min. wage telemarketers spent almost a hour on the phone with you....

maybe a monthly charge. Don't stress to much, these companies get everyone at least once.

They usually have to give you a telephone number on the Visa bill in order to give you a chance to cancel out. If the $2 charge comes in, you can track it from there to cancel out.

Otherwise it is something like $80-$120 a year for "membership" to these things.

Last night I read this and was like " :bird: /wwwthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif :bird: :bird: :bird: :bird: :bird:"

But after getting about 3 hours of sleep last night thinking about how stupid I was, worrying about my credit, getting up and working 8 hours in a machine shop lugging and fixing vapor recovery motors, and finally calling my bank and getting this mess straightened out...thats actually pretty funny   /wwwthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

All my cards are through my bank and when I called and explained the situation... I found out I had not been billed for anything yet and I opted to cancel this card

Gotta give a shout out to the cool bank rep who made me feel alot better by telling me about the many people who get taken :waytogo:

Thanks to all who responded, even the smart arses   It went down just like Micah described. Yet another reason I don't like phones  I'm going to play some Texas Hold 'Em, then get some sleep
