In the other r-1 vs gixxer post there was a small discussion about squids. i want to leave that post refrain to the bikes.

I am well aware if you crash with out a helmet on you are going to be hurting badly if not die. but some of you guys post all this squid talk if you see a person riding a bike not up to your specs. remember people, not everytown in the world is like yours. if you ride around town just cruisin without a helmet or gear are you really a squid? I am not talking abou hitting the mtn roads hardcore draggin knee here. Not everybody rides there bike to the MAX! ALOT of people have these bikes just to say they have a r1. they are not pushin it like YOU all the time. if ever. If i could ride around town without a helmet i would. but that is it, i am riding around town! when i go to ride harder i put on all the gear. The traffic in my area is not all that bad. You say anyone can pull out if front of you at any time. that is 100% correct. there are alot of things in life that could put you in a freaky situation. I ride in the summer with no shirt and hemet and shorts alot. But its to go to my friends 2-3 miles away. I RIDE FOR THE JOY OF RIDING! i am well aware that if i rack up i am gonna be hurting. but when i am doing this i am going 20-50 mph on not so populated roads. I am ALWAYS looking for cagers and i take it easy!

I am not supporting riding without gear. I am just trying to say that not every person is all out and not wearing ALL the gear does not make you a squid. do you people smoke ? do you people drink? have any of u ever used "real" drugs. these are things that you KNOW are going to kill you ,yet you call people squids.

I have racked up my dirtbike(please dont go on about dirtbikes are not streetbikes again. I KNOW) while wearing full gear and it saved my life. I know how important gear is. i just think you people are so quick to yell SQUID its ridiculous. Have i ever done any squid actions -yes.were they stupid, yes and no, but so have all of you at some point in time!

just remem not everyone rides for the same reason! if guys are doing crazy stuff with no gear then i agree u are acting in a squidly fashion. but just because a person is not up to your spec does not make them a squid.

Just wait 'till you go down and your skin (or head) is the first thing to touch the pavement......I hope it doesn't take something like this before you change your views.

Yeah, everytime you ride you take risks, but why not minimize those risks by choosing to protect yourself.

Well for whatever its worth I agree with you YZROOSTINYA. Whenever I ride hard I am always in my gear. And where I just moved from, the mountains of NC, I was usually always in my gear bc there, every road is one that has to be road hard!/images/icons/smile.gif And plus your are required to where a helmet at all times in that state, as of now. But when taking my bike to the beach, I like to pose like every other bike owner does. We love showing off our bikes, and since u cant really ride hard there, I like riding around in shorts and tennis shoes. That way I can chat with other riders and women, and catch some rays all at the same time. But I'm definetly not there to ride hard, just to show off the R1 and meet as many women as possible/images/icons/wink.gif

i agree with bithinr6, i used to be a squid at one time and learned my lesson the hard way. Its a good thing to. The last accident i had, i must have landed face first , because my helmet cracked in 4 places and i had the foam that is inside the helmet marked on my face for 3 days, not to mention my first concussion ! I believe my helmet saved my life. I love all kinds of riding, especially stunting and know the consequences that come with it, I did total my bike after that accident, but bought another 3 days later. I will always wear gear , weather i like it or not. the pavement is just to unforgiving.

I've been saying what YZROOSTINYA is saying a lot on this site when someone calls another a squid and I ALWAYS wear my gear and helmet. We should come up with a name for all the people who call others squids/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Anyways...I think some of you's are missing his point. He's saying that we all know what will/could happen if someone crashes or whatever when they're not wearing gear or a helmet, but just because they don't THINK like we/some of us do, doesn't mean we should call them names. He made a very good point about people drinking and doing drugs when that person KNOWS that it's killing him or at the least, not very good for them, but yet they still do it and then critize others. People spend WAY too much time worrying and thinking about other people's way of life and their problems instead of looking at their own.

Let other people be right sometimes...it soothes them for being nothing else!

the only time that I ever ride without a helmet is if I'm just going up and down the block. If I go around the block I put my helmet on. So rarely will you find Winko riding without a helmet

jmoney, I agree 10000000%. I ride in the summer without a leather jacket, I wear a t-shirt. I ALWAYS wear my helmet. But, you know what we call the guys who wear the matching colorful boots and leathers....Wannabe ****!! They are guys who want others to think they can ride better than any of them and who need to tell their egos that they could be racers, they just choose not to be. When I wear all my gear, it consists of my helmet, jeans, black leather riding jacket and black steel toe boots. These guys who spend all their money on leather suits and other crap, other than popping a six inch wheelie or if it goes any higher it was an accident, probably will never see what their bike is really capable of. Not that pushing your bike to it's limit makes you a good rider, the only thing that makes a good rider is a guy (or girl) who knows their ability and respects their machine. If you respect your bike, your bike will help you become a better rider. The ones who call others squids remind me of the jocks in high school who thought everyone else would never be as good as them. Then you go to your 10 year reunion and they are the fat, bald guys who married the prom queen. Only now the prom queen is built more like the dairy queen.

You know there is alot of sterotyping going on here. Do what you want and who cares what other people think. It is you choice to wear gear or not. One last note
Only now the prom queen is build more like the dairy queen.[/qoute] that is one of the funnist things I have heard all wekk

AirmenGoob, You're right! That's exactly the way I feel. Personally I would never ride without a helmet but if someone else wants to then, fine by me! I just get a little tired of the ones who like to cater to their own ego by trying to make others feel inferior. This site, in my view, is for riders to meet and interact with other riders and maybe give some insight into riding styles or mods and improvements to each others bikes. Instead, there are a few who seem to view it as a competition.

So what you're saying is that we have to be proficient at dragging knee before we're allowed to wear leathers without being call a wannabe or a ***??? What kind of BS is that, thats a real good thing for new riders to see... People that have just stared riding and wear full leathers , expensive helmets etc deserve a pat on the back and here this idiot is calling them **** and wannabes... If its really fookin hot in the summmer i'll just wear my jacket, gloves and lid... but nothing less.

Two guys have died and one is a turnip so far during bike week in Daytona, all three weren't wearing helmets. I've seen pcitures from crahes at 20mph where guys were wearing only a helmet with jeans... they damn near died from the road rash. seeing skin wore right off to the bones on elbows, knees and hips was aboslutey disturbing but all it takes is a cage to cut you off and take you out, thats it... A helmet and full gear (yes it was all matching colors) saved my life after crahsing at 50mph into a ditch.

Sometimes i could care less if people don't want to wear a helmet or gear but it really makes me sad to see people get killed or even worse turn into turnips. If you want that to happen to you fine but don't try and push it upon others, epecially all of the new riders on this site

BTW, check out my profile, I'm lofting a bit more than that 6" wheelie you're talking about...

The day I can plan any/all my crashes, I'll stop wearing a helmet. Until then, I'd rather dress for the crash, not the ride. And Hey, if I don't crash, I'm that far ahead of the game, right?? /images/icons/smile.gif

JoBu
