I usually don't wear anything either and don't find the noise to be that bad (HJC CL-12 fusion II). But sometimes I use my portable mp3 player and use the earbuds that I bought and they work pretty good. Still with the two brothers can it gets pretty loud and drowns a good portion of the music.

The noise doesn't need to be "unbearable" to benefit from earplugs. If you've never tried them, you'd be suprised at how much of the fatigue you feel after a long ride is due to noise alone. That's beside the bonus of saving your hearing for the things that really matter...

Hell, have you ever tried some of the custom fitted jobbies? A friend of mine has a terrible time with the disposeable ones too.

I rode the first 20 years without, during that time I was also subjected to allot of big bore gunfire.
Now I wear them all the time, my hearing is still good (surprising I know) but I don't feel like I'm still moving (velocitized) after a long ride.

hell_devil, maybe you're used to it because you're already partially deaf.

I have an HJC AC-10, a pretty quite helmet, and I still find the wind noise annoying on the freeway. So I wear earplugs. Now, instead of hearing nothing but wind noise, I can hear the cars around me, horns, sirens, etc.

alan my hearing is perfect and for getting tired of windnoise or not hearing anything when you get of the bike i have never had a problem with it, not even after 890 miles in one day. like said before it has alot to do with the helmet andalso with what your used to

Hey JoJo -- I find earplugs very soothing on any highway/freeway rides over ~30-45 minutes. When you follow RideNasty at HER speeds, I figure it's gonna help keep me from going deaf /images/icons/laugh.gif. Also, as was noted, I find I feel less tired and my ears aren't buzzing after a lonnnnng ride.
You can still hear traffic noises fine...

I'm a little dubious, if your hearing is that good, you don't get any ringing or slight deafening after a long ride? I've gotten both of those and find earplugs on a long trip (especially on the droning freeway parts) to be invaluable. Oh yeah, and my ears aren't ringing from several hours of 60-90mph self induced headwind...

morth if your dubious about my hearing try to hear your cellphone ring when doing 90 and having your cellphone in the inner pocket of your leather jacket.
