How necessary is it to flush the cooling system on a new bike after about 14k miles? My service manual says it should be done, but it's a little unclear on how often or if it's really necessary.

Re: Cooland System Flush

I am not sure what they put in bikes but I do know that on my latest the coolant was crap at 8K. It still had the right color but the reservoir tank had about 1/2" of gunge in the bottom. Changing difficulty depends on the bike you have.

its said that it is good practice to change it once a year. but i do mine twice a year, just for safe practice. if you leave your bike out or it is in the weather a lot, i would change it ofetn. also, in the summer time i run straight water. it helps it cool better and gets all that yucky color of antifreeze off everything. but i would do it about twice a year.

Plain water does not cool better. I'll elaborate on the chemistry if you would like but believe me it does not. Also, the bearings in your water pump rely on the lubricants in antifreeze. Use a 50/50 mix or the premixed products available.

I just did it on my wife's 1996 zx9R. As someone said earlier, it had good color and it seemed fine but when i flushed it lots of dis-coloration liquid came out. I flushed it for about 40 minutes just to make sure. I also use a 50/50 mixture.
