Chatter Box?

2692 Views 27 Replies 12 Participants Last post by Raymundo
Does anyone here have a chatter box? I was wondering how well they work. I have always wanted to get one but I'm a little skeptical about the VOX (voice activation) on them. But I thought, with the way hands free cell phones have advanced maybe they have the VOX thing down now. VOX was always crappy in the past. I wonder if the background noise from the bike causes a problem with the VOX? If so, the VOX feature would be useless unless you turn it way up, but then you would have to scream for the thing to engage. Just something I have been curious about before I spend all that money on one. My cousin and I have been talking about getting them. Thanks for any info!

It's all been asked & answered already, do a search on Chatter Box and all will be revealed.

Well I would, except, weren't all of the forums histories lost when the server crashed? I did a search and nothing comes up within the past year!

Yeah I got one and I refer to her as my wife! She doesn't "Chatter" too much anymore but I am interested in purchasing the On/Off switch option.

Sorry 01YZFR1 I forgot about the crash.
The vox is best used in town or at low speeds, I have the X1 and it has a PTT right on the side making it convenient to use.
When we did use the vox we would reach up, flip it all the way over so the wind noise would activate it, speak and flip it back.
I use mine mostly for listening to music now.

I think certain models do. I seen that the more expensive one's that have the VOX have an AUX input jack for adding other devices like mp3 players. I bought an RCA mp3 player, which is awesome and you can plug it right into a chatter box and it plays straight through the chatter box and it's headset. When the VOX is activated it will mute the music while you are talking or listening to the other person. That's why I am curious about the VOX feature, because if it picks up wind/bike noise it would keep activating and muting the music which kind of defeats the purpose/images/icons/crazy.gif.

No problem.

So I guess from what you're saying, it's probably ok at speeds like 40mph and under but other than that you have to use the "push to talk"? Would you say it's worth having? I really don't want to get one if you don't recommend it. Like I said in my post to AirmanG. I have an mp3 player for the music. Thanks for th info/images/icons/smile.gif.

Hey folks,

I've also been interested in these contraptions.

But I have a few questions?

Do you have to DRILL a hole on the side of your helmet to install it?

And if you do drill, what happens when you don't use it? (You remove it). Do you live with an unsightly hole?

Or is it wireless?

Thanks.

No. It clips to the helmet. The clip slides between the padding and the inside of the helmet and you stick the ear pieces and the mic inside the helmet. Just tuck the wires inside the padding. Actually they look like a really nice setup but I just thought the "push to talk" could be kind of a pain if you're running through some twisties at any rate of speed. That's where the VOX is nice, but only if works right!

I have them and they are very useful up until about 80mph. After that the wind noise starts to get to loud. Yes they have an aux input, and I plug a CD player into mine when I ride. I have a small piece of velcro on my gas lid that I velcro my cd player to. They get a good reccommendation from me.
hey LUCAS what kind do you use?

I have the cheapo chatterbox-- two channels, and Mic/Aux ports. VOX works well until you get to freeway speeds... at that point, nothing works unless you're using a nice quiet helmet and big windshield. With my R1+doublebubble screen, I can barely hear anything at the top volume setting doing 70mph.

Ultimately, chatterboxes just come in handy when you're at the part of a ride when you're bored cause you're held up or having to slow down (through towns, etc.). Can make the tedious portion of a ride alot better by having someone to talk to.

I recommend them, just be aware they have their limitations.
In the twisties the VOX works well because the speeds are not enough to cause a problem, on a short straight you might get up enough speed to trigger the VOX but it will reset as soon as you dive into the turn.
Be aware that when you're playing catch up and your VOX is triggered you lock everyone else out so while they get to listen to your wind noise they can't trigger their own VOX to relay an important message like.....COPS,COPS,COPS ( one of the limitations I was talking about ).

LOL!/images/icons/laugh.gif I never thought about that, that's good! Which model do you have? I thought the more expensive ones have full duplex? Well, then again, I guess they would be able to talk back but only to you. That makes sense, they could talk back and you could hear them but everyone else (including the rider talking) would only hear your noise. I didn't think about that. So, I guess it would be a good investment then. Like you and Lucas said, usually when we're running at freeway speeds we really wouldn't have a reason to talk. I appreciate the info.

That's where the mp3 players come in handy. It's only about half the size of a pack of cigarettes. You can wear it on your belt or on your wrist(it comes with a wrist strap). And, no moving parts equals no skipping. This thing is great./images/icons/cool.gif
