Thanks ChopScrewy!! I've been waiting to see some dyno numbers for the new R1, and I'm not disappointed. The hp and torque numbers are right around where I thought they would be.

Here you go.

Don't you hate when somebody drops a fact in your lap that contradicts your preconceptions? Or a dyno chart? This one makes 138.9 horses at 11,200 rpm--just four more more than the '01 bike--and 75.7 foot-pounds of torque at 8,300 rpm, five more foot pounds than the old one. It feels like more.

Before the R1 came out this year, everyone INCLUDING Yamaha was saying only around a 2 or so gain in hp. Last years R1 according to the "hard numbers" page at the back of "Motorcyclist" was dynoed at 129.8, that's almost a 10hp jump. I don't buy 138hp. If they managed it then sweet, if not, I won't be surprised.

jmoney,

I agree, but I think its just the different dynos that are being used to conduct these tests (maybe?). Also the correction for elevation.

Although I must say, that is a nice smooth dyno curve coming out of a Yamaha motorcycle. It must be the FI, huh? ;)

Being a loyal Honda owner, I just bought a new 954. Looks like Honda gets their ass kicked for yet another year. If the Honda only had a decent motor, I think the rest of the bike is top notch! I'll keep this thing until '04, if 'Baba' still doesn't have his sh_t together by then, I'm moving to yamaha.

The 929/54 is a excellent motor, look at the output compared to the other cc's and companies. I think what Honda need to do is loosen the emissions a bit, then you would see better HP and TQ results, oh yeah and about 50 more cc's

I don't care about horsepower per liter. I care about hp to the rearwheel. More importantly it's the much stronger midrange that both yamaha and suzuki provide that I want Honda to also achieve. Yamaha made the new, faster R1 a lot easier to ride than Honda made the new Blade a better performer in '02.

Some dynos read higher than others, I've seen 02 R1's dyno from 132-138 and stock 954's dyno from 130-136. The power to weight ratio will be the same since the 954 is lighter. Who cares about a few hp, if you know how to ride you won't need it. If you claim you need it cause your over-weight or obese then cut back on the McD's and use the $$ saved at a gym. All the time people use hp to make-up for their lack of abillity or too much lard, if hp was all that mattered then everyone would ride a ZX12. Who really thinks 2-3hp makes that much of a diff?

Stu,

How come anytime anyone says anything negative relative to honda's power (even a honda owner), some rossi/hayden-wanna-be has to question their abiilty, etc. ? I do happen to weigh 225lbs, but I can also benchpress the 'actual' dry weight of a 954, so going to the gym is not the issue. (BTW, You probably weigh 170lbs soaking wet and don't have the arm strength. Holding on to one of these bikes probably represents your biggest challenge.) It's not the 2-3 peak hp that I miss, it's the mid-range torque that I want. I happen to like Honda's better, in general, I'm just honest enough to admit the motor is in 3rd place. I was expecting more and hope Baba provides it in the future.
