Triumph Sprint ST

McQueen, Noticed you were buying a VFR next, really can't go wrong, but do look into a Triumph Sprint ST. The VFR and the ST are my two favorite bikes. After riding a 99' VFR800, I was very impressed. But I still would go for the ST, more character in the engine department. The Honda is almost too refined, which can be a good trait, but the engine is the soul of the bike and I like a little racket of the triple. Plus if you plan to sport-tour, the ST midrange is incredible. 60-80 roll ons are incredible even in 5th.
