Headshake/Wobble

Bike--2000 Yamaha R1, 5600 miles.

3rd set of tires is on--Got new Metzeler Sportec M-1's put on today...Problem is, is I've got a wobble/shake in the steering from 52-56 mph. Doesn't seem to be as bad when accelerating. Coasting down from 56-52 it becomes more evident and pronounced.

This isn't the first time I've experienced this--when I put on a new set of Dunlop 207's (2nd set of tires), it did the same thing. The shop balanced the front tire again--it minimized the problem but it was still there. I chalked it up to crappy tires and vowed never to buy Dunlop again.

The suspension settings are stock, the tire pressure is at 35 front and 36 rear. Everything feels tight and it rides fine at speeds above/below where the problems lies. FWIW, I don't do wheelies or stoppies or abuse the bike in any way.

Anyone have a clue to what could be causing this? Steering head bearings too loose? How would one check/adjust them if this could be the problem? Anything else to check? HeLp!! TIA

Re: Headshake/Wobble

If you don't have a steering stabilizer that would be the first move I would do.... It'll smooth up the ride 100 times under acceleration. To tighten the steering head.. Remove the main bolt. Loosen and remove the triple clamp... Take off the lock washer and then I use a flat punch and gently tap in with a hammer to tighten the steering head assembly.. When done put it all back together and your done... My 02 R1 came from the factory loose and I tightened it when I installed the stabilizer.... Good Luck!

Re: Headshake/Wobble

How tight should the steering head bearing be?

Re: Headshake/Wobble

I tighten mine by feel, but you can always call the dealer and ask for the tightening specs for the bike..
