'98 R1, the original ONE

working on a friends bike, curious to know if there were any weaknesses/problems endemic to the 1st gen R1's...? things like clutch, second gear, head bearings, valve guides, big end bearings, high torque bolts loosening, carburetion, t-stat, etc. etc. i ask because there's an occasional "thunk" that occurs at low speeds (2nd/3rd gear light acceleration). seems to come from the clutch area, but not 100%. not repeatable on the ramp, only under load.

The bikes I long for these days, are not the new ones... don't like the 2005's and up, not my bag. I long for the bikes I had boners for in highschool, mid to late 90's. Red 98 R1, Copper 'Busa, Green zx7r (got it!) Erion 900's, etc. I would have a stable of late 90's sportbikes if I could

I'm with you on that. I would like to have an '00 GSXR 750, an '00 RC-51, and a '99 ZX-9R.

Sorry to hijack the thread S1.

THe clutch was crap on the early R1's , the got better in 02 but still sucked. Look up info in the r1forum.com for more info on the mod to add an extra clutch plate.

Maybe a broken tooth on one of the gears or a worn dog on one of the gears. 2-3rd gears and usually where I would see shifting issues with most Yamahas.. My old FJ1100 did the same thing and the problem was 2nd gear had a missing tooth on the gear .

got another question. anybody know what brand or who makes .01 shims specifically for the R1 or are simply interchangeble with the 5-valve head...?
