Oil

What oil do you run in your bike? Is there a reason why?

My favorite oil for the price is Mobil 1. Reason is I have rebuilt many engines over the years and my race engines on Mobil 1 always seemed to be in great shape compared street bikes with less miles. My second favorite oil is Honda Oil as I really like the oil but its out of my price range. If memory serves for the gold its about 8 bucks a quart..

Rotella/T ... But don't tell anyone: sometimes I used the cheap-o 15W40 for winter storage ($4 for 4L). Works great, low cost and readily available.

Diesel oil is in all 3 bikes.

How much is the fish?

I use Motul in the race bike and Amsoil in the 748. The Amsoil is pretty spendy but I got hooked up with a dealer and get a case discount. The Motul is stupid expensive but one of my sponsors helps out with the cost (thanks motoprimo).

Take a look at this oil testing link in our signature and see how your favorite oil stacks up to the rest.

Just a heads up on using diesel oil in your bikes. Soon the only diesel oil that you can purchase will have the spec CJ-4 on it. This is the new spec for 07 diesels with the new emission equipment called particulate filters for the exhaust. This has a totally different additive package that has not been used up to this point and may not work as well with wet clutches as the older version diesel oils that some of you have been using. If you know of anyone using this new oil let us kow how it is working out for them.

Working well. Thanks.

Already got the confirmation from Shell that it is "ok" for a wet clutch. It's actually much closer to the JASO motorcycle specifications now than it was before.

EDIT: All the Rotella/T w/ Triple Protection is formulated with the new specifications. It's been on the shelf at the local stores for a while now; though the synthetic versions do not yet have the CJ-4 certification.

I run Mobil1 Synthetic for V-Twins and change it every 3,000 on the dot.

Anyone know if the Rotella stuff would be ok to run in the Aprilia?

I've been running Rotella in my GS1150 and it seems to do just fine. I'm currently running Quaker State semi-synthetic for Turbocharged engines in my M750 and it also seems to work good.

Do you need any JASO specifications for your engine? Aprilias aren't much different than other bikes...

I have no idea. Here is what my Service Manual says.

I used to use the Agip stuff but it was a little much at $15/quart.
