gr205g 04-26-2002, 08:04 AM Question for SBW ... out of curiousity, how did you get started riding bikes? Did you start riding as a child with the help of your parents or friends? At what age? Did you start as an adult because you thought it looked fun? Were you encouraged to start riding by a boyfriend or spouse?

metalninjababe 04-26-2002, 08:11 AM I came from a family of riders, my grandfather's brother, my cousins, my brother, etc. I think i always liked it. my brother would give me rides in high school. And he had some friends who rode, so an underlying reason may be i liked the guys i met and wanted to impress. But i didnt learn until several years after high school, it was a spontaneous thing that i acted on.

SpeedyBella 04-26-2002, 08:45 AM Can't remember exactly when the infatuation began, but I've always loved them. Father raced formula cars so it must be in the blood. Love the smell, love the sound. I was lucky enough to have a boyfriend that trusted me enough to teach me. He's created a monster! I did write something about it but it's long. But since you did ask, I'll try to put it as an attachment.
SpeedyBella 04-26-2002, 08:49 AM nope, again.
I haven't a clue if this is working. /images/icons/crazy.gif
Willie 04-26-2002, 09:11 AM sorry don't think it is, it asked me to save something to my comp...what're you tryin to do? attach an image?
Here ya go Speedybella... this attatchment should work. Web browsers can't view a Word document, so I converted it to an HTML page that everyone should be able to view.

I got into riding because of my brother, Bruce (Duc_M900). He and his friend got into bikes about two years ago. About a year ago my brother was teaching a friend of his to ride on a Rebel250 (his first bike before the Monster900, what a jump that was!!). When they were done and his friend left, I asked my brother to show me a little bit of how to ride. About ten minutes later I was hooked! A few weeks before that the friend that my brother had gotten into riding with had to move to Kentucky cause his wife was transferred (army). He'd left his Ninja250 here with his parents and wanted to sell it. It all came together nicely. About a month later I bought the Ninja and was taking the test up at the MVA. /images/icons/smile.gif Now one year later I've got an R6 and I couldn't be happier!

SpeedyBella 04-26-2002, 10:22 AM Aha, Thank you Mary!!!
FastKitty750 04-26-2002, 11:59 AM It's in my blood too, bikes are all over in my family. My uncle rides, my aunt rides, so do a couple cousins. My brother who is 12 years older than me, has always been into street bikes. He used to race off road too. So, being the bratty little sister that I was (and still am!), I was always trying to follow in his footsteps. I think the first time I got on a dirtbike was when I was about 9-10 yrs old when my brother bought a motorcycle shop. Then, I got my first bike for my 16th birthday, it was a trade in that came into my brothers dealership (Thanks to my brother for talking mom into that one!). It was all over from there! I started on a little Ninja 250, then went to an 1987 VFR 700, then a 1986 VFR 750 which I just sold over the weekend. Now, I've got an Aprilia Falco SL1000 on order that's supposed to be here next week. 28 years old & I'm still hooked!
Meeeooowww!!!
zx-7rgirl 04-26-2002, 02:13 PM My brother raced motorcross/supercross for many years when we were growing up so I got the hand-me-down race bikes as a kid. My dad didn't want me to be bored watching my brother practice all the time, so he'd let me 'practice' too. (I think secretly my dad wanted another son instead of a daughter!) I rode dirt bikes until I got to high school, but my interest didn't turn to street bikes until I got to ride my brother's brand new '93 GSXR 750. Boy was I the envy of all the guys when I showed up to my high school graduation on a bike. A few years later, it just happens that my boyfriend also likes to ride and he bought a GSXR 750 and I guess he got tired of riding 'bitch' all the time and bought me my own bike. That was about five years ago.
Great story SpeedyBella. (Stupid curbs...)/images/icons/laugh.gif Thanks for posting it.

I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money."
evollife 04-26-2002, 06:59 PM strange I was able to view it as a word document but I also use neoplanet for a browser.

BikerGirl 04-26-2002, 10:00 PM In the family, but not sport cus they didn't have them back then lol. My mom and dad met on bikes (my mom was on the back of one, and my dad was on his) But my bros are into it cus of me! I wasn't into sport bikes, tell my last boyfriend 2 years ago, then I fell in love! He wanted to teach me to ride his new F4 (at the time) But I was to afraid I would drop it, to leat him teach me. So 7 months after we broke up and I was missing the bike bad so I took to a riding class, so I could ride on my owen. And 6 months after that I got Britney, my little baby Ninja!
ps sorry about the spelling I'm drunk

NuckingFutz 04-27-2002, 11:54 PM I'm the only one in my family with the passion for riding. I'm not really sure what exactly spurred me into buying a bike....I used to be a passenger with a co-worker on late night rides in Vegas, then my husband (he's had a bike since high school) and I got really active with sportbikes. Where I am now in Idaho, sportbikes aren't that big so I ended up going with the crowd and bought a KTM dirtbike yesterday. Its so much fun I'm almost afraid I'm going to like it better than my CBR! Ok, well maybe not, can't do 160 on the KTM!
FastKitty750 04-28-2002, 04:15 PM It seems like the "motorcycle addiction" spreads from one person to another like some kind of virus! (but a good one!) My bestfriend has been riding as a passenger with me for a # of years. She kept saying how she couldn't wait to get her own bike. A couple months ago, she finally broke down & bought an SV650!
Meeeooowww!!!
Ninjaslayer 04-28-2002, 04:24 PM Got my ex started on the back of mine. Bought her, her first bike. Now she can't stay off her bike. Yes it is a virus.

Jenna 04-29-2002, 06:31 AM I'm not quite sure how since no one around me rode when i was growing up but i've always been fascinated by motorcycles. I remember telling my mom i didn't want a car for my 16th birthday..i wanted a Harley /images/icons/shocked.gif
Needless to say i didn't get it. A few years later a boyfriend turned me onto sportbikes instead of Harleys..something for which i will be forever grateful./images/icons/wink.gif

RidinAssUp 04-30-2002, 09:29 AM I came from a family of riders (three Uncles that all rode). One of my Uncles had sportbikes since I was a teenager. He taught me to ride...and it just kept going from there! Though my parents can't figure out to this day why their daughter (and not their son!) was the one to become a cop, get the tats AND ride the motorcycles! (Just a Tom boy at heart!)
The Uncle that taught me how to ride (who just turned 49!) Just emailed me a picture of his 2002 R1 last week...and mine and Duck's 15 year old daughter is begging to learn to ride too.....so I guess it's running in the family. /images/icons/smile.gif

f1_champ 05-01-2002, 05:24 AM trying to pick up girls, lol
gr205g 05-01-2002, 08:01 PM Thanks for the responses.
And for the record, I'm not try to pick up chicks. I was just thinking about teaching a girlfriend to ride to see if she could share one of my interests, and I wondered about whether that was a typical way that women started to ride, or if they started as children, or own their own, etc.
